Wearing an elaborate crown, Our Lady of Mount Carmel extends her arms in benediction. Alejandro Chávez portrays the Madonna named for Mount Carmel in the Holy Land, where a chapel was built in her honor before her assumption into heaven. In 1251, she appeared in England, offering favors and protection to those who wear her scapular. Also known as Immaculate Virgin and Star of the Sea, she inspired the Carmelite order.

Known as a retablo, this traditional diorama is housed in a colorful chest crafted of wood and painted. Chávez carefully models each figure and paints them by hand.

Surrounded by flowers, the Virgin of Guadalupe is queen of the heavens. She first appeared in Mexico in 1531 and, as proof of her visit, caused roses to bloom at the site. Named Patron Saint of the Americas by Pope John Paul II, she is a beloved manifestation of the Catholic faith. Alejandro Chávez recreates the portrait that appeared miraculously on the tilma (cactus fiber cloak) of Saint Juan Diego in 1531. He creates the image in a traditional diorama known as a retablo; each figurine is modeled and painted by hand.

Floral doors hide a scene of eternal attraction – the birth of the Baby Jesus. The Three Wise Men accompany Mary and Joseph, every figure attired in the typical clothing of the Peruvian Andes. Alejandro Chavez crafts this retablo altar entirely by hand, constructing a wood frame to house delicately painted figures.

In a rectangular composition, scenes celebrating childhood games decorate the frame of this wall mirror from Peru. Alejandro Chavez designs this piece of wall decor, elaborating four sections with petite hand-painted figurines in the style of traditional retablos. From human pyramids to kites and soccer, this mirror captures the spirit of an Andean childhood.

This adorable retablo is the original creation of Alejandro Chavez in Peru. The wood and ceramic folk art accent features two levels. On the top, two Andean sweethearts express their love for each other; while on the bottom, hand-crafted hearts are painted with 'Te Amo' (I love you). Retablos like this were inspired by the altarpieces first brought to Peru by Spanish conquerors.

After Christ's death on the cross, the image itself came to be venerated as one of the most important Christian symbols. Alejandro Chávez shows an empty cross, graced with a portrait of Jesus. Ladders reach to beams where ofrendas (offerings) have been placed. Figures in traditional Andean dress kneel below the cross, their eyes lifted in devout prayer. Known as a retablo, this traditional diorama is housed in a colorful chest crafted of wood and painted. Chávez carefully models each figure from ceramic plaster and paints them by hand; the retablo receives an antique finish.
