Guatemala's Lopez Garcia Family creates this delightful embellished table runner that is sure to be a conversation starter. The short ivory cotton runner is embellished at both ends with quitapenas, or Guatemalan "worry dolls". According to legend, the princess Ixmucané was granted the ability to solve people's problems by the Sun God. Over time, people began to make tiny dolls in remembrance of Ixmucané. They would tell the dolls their problems in the hopes that Ixmucané would solve them. The custom became very popular, and continues to this day. The charming table runner is completed by olive green tassels at both ends.

Quitapenas means "to remove worries" in Spanish; artisan Aura Lopez explains the Mayan worry doll tradition. "My grandparents said that the way to use them was to take the doll out of the bag or wooden box and tell it your problems and fears," she states. "Then, you place the doll under your pillow and, the next day, your problem becomes smaller or can be resolved." The set consists of two pairs of male and female worry dolls joined together by a red heart. Handmade, the dolls are dressed in vividly-colored traditional Guatemalan attire and arrive in a pouch of handwoven cotton fabric.

Legend has it that the Maya Sun God gave princess Ixmucané the gift of solving people's problems. With time people started making dolls in Ixmucané's honor and they would tell her their woes, hoping she would solve them through the dolls. "This tradition is still alive," says Ana from the Lopez Garcia Family. "The idea is to have many worry dolls and trust each one with whatever troubles you. Once you've told them, you put them under your pillow. It is said that during the night, while we sleep, the dolls will whisper the solution to our troubles. For us, crafting the worry dolls - muñequitas quita penas - is our main source of income.It allows us to provide our children with an education as well as a job for all of us." The set of 12 arrives in a pedal-loomed cotton pouch.

A perfect gift to share with a friend you love.

I have ordered a number of worry dolls from the Lopez Garcia Family and have found that they make the cutest, most individual looking worry dolls I have ever seen. These adorable "Love and Hope" doll pairs are so sweet. I gave one pair to a dear friend of mine and he loved them, as do I. A nice way to share some love and hope with someone.
