The mariachi, a distinctive musical style, is a musical group comprised of singers dressed as the traditional charro, or elegant gentleman cowboy from Jalisco. Women mariachis, however, do not dress as escaramuzas, the feminine counterpart of the charro, but adapt the men's dress. The narrow pants with their ornate silver buttons become a long skirt. The short jacket, white shirt and tie remain the same as does the fancy sombrero, and she traditionally wears silver earrings with her hair pulled back into braids or a ponytail. Working in ceramic, Luis Morales depicts a catrina as a mariachi.

The word catrina is widely used in Mexico to mean "elegant and polished." Lithographer Jose Guadalupe Posadas created the skeletal Catrina, who was later immortalized in the murals of Diego Rivera.

remembering those that came before

I had such a hard time deciding on which 1 of these to pick from!! I picked Francesca because she is holding a platter to feed her family . The detail is amazing and the painting is so exact. I will probably need to order another 1 from this artist because I was so impressed with the talent it was made with.

A beautiful Catrina.

This is a very nice Catrina. What impressed me the most is that given my past experience with this type of ceramics, I was hesitant to order it just because I was afraid it may not make it on the shipping. Well, I had to use my old dissection skills to unwrap it. The packaging was superbly done. Now to the piece, it is as beautiful as it shows in the picture. It is elegant and genuinely "coqueta."

This is my second Catrina sculpture by Luis Morales, and once again, I’m absolutely blown away. La Catrina Violeta is a stunning piece—full of character, color, and extraordinary craftsmanship. The detail and quality are truly unsurpassed. Every element feels intentional and masterfully executed, from the delicate features to the vibrant dress. Luis Morales clearly pours heart and skill into his work, and it shows. This sculpture isn't just a decorative piece; it's a daily source of joy and admiration.
