Two agave plants line the entrance to the Colonial church in card 33 of Marina Pallares' exclusive interpretation of Mexico's lotería. It is a unique version of the classic bingo game featuring traditional images. The loteria made its appearance in the second half of the 18th century, and it is still a favorite at schools, fairs, carnivals and festivals. "I grew up in Jalisco, known for the production of tequila from agave plants, and as a child I used to play lotería all the time. These two facts inspired me to create the 'Tequila Lotto' series," confides Pallares, who credits the influence of Leopoldo Méndez and José Guadalupe Posada in her work. She masters aquafortis and aquatint etching techniques to create this eloquent composition.

Little Jesus and her cousin Elisabeth's little boy — who grew up to became Saint John the Baptist — stay close to Mary, who is ever watchful. Fernando Sayan Polo takes his inspiration from the 1507 masterpiece by Raphael Sanzio da Urbino, a painter in Italy during the High Renaissance. La belle jardinière,, also known as "Madonna and Child with Saint John the Baptist," depicts the Virgin and young boys in a similar pose. But the Peruvian artist adds halos bathed in gleaming bronze leaf and golden brocade to Mary's opulent gown.

Christ is known as the Good Shepherd, a metaphor taken from the gospel and prefigured in the Psalms. Representing unblemished sacrifice, modesty and innocence, the lamb became a symbol of Jesus during the first century A.D.

Desak fondly recalls the clear river water and beautiful scenery of her childhood. But her favorite memories were ones spent with her father, bringing him lunch at the farm and scaring away the birds. After he passed, Desak and her 10 siblings found themselves struggling to survive.

Everything changed in 2001 when she joined NOVICA. Today, her gorgeous batik robes and kimonos are internationally known, and her workshop employs 15 artisans who assist her in producing traditional and contemporary batik garments.
