Mexican artisans Zeny and Reyna create this excellent alebrije sculpture, demonstrating their expertise in the Oaxacan folk art form. The whimsical sculpture is carved from copal wood and painted in lavish detail in a rainbow of colors.

The folk art tradition of alebrijes dates back to the 1930s in Mexico City. A man named Pedro Linares was taken ill, and in his feverish dreams he saw a strange land populated with curious creatures--a donkey with wings, a rooster with bull's horns, and a lion with the head of a dog. The beasts all ran at him, shouting the nonsense word, "alebrije! alebrije!". Upon his recovery, Linares began recreating the fantastical creatures he had seen in his dream in papier mache. The art form gained popularity, and alebrijes are now made of wood as well as papier mache.

Beautiful

I ordered this for my friend's daughter who just became a Jr. Firefighter. I love it! It is the perfect gift and definitely a conversation piece. I have just one little disappointment. The one that was pictured when I ordered it had one of the firemen holding a cat, which was perfect since she is a cat lover. However, I did know from the description that I may not get the exact one I ordered. I am still happy with it, just a little disappointed.

Awesome "Rustic Cyclist" Sculpture!

I purchased the "Rustic Cyclist" sculpture for my dad for Father's Day. Cycling has been a very meaningful pastime for my dad ever since he was a teenager, so he was thrilled when he opened the box and saw the sculpture! And although the piece was made with recycled auto parts, my dad thought that it was very well-made! Thank you so much, Armando, for creating such beautiful sculptures that tell stories that people can definitely relate to! Keep up the fantastic work!!! :)
