Delivery EstimateThe menacing fangs of Rahwana command attention in this mask by Nyoman Indrawati Subrata. According to the Ramayana epic, Rahwana is the ogre-king of Alengka, mythically situated on the island of Sri Lanka. He kidnaps Sita, the wife of the heroic Rama, only to eventually be killed by Rama and the white monkey army, commanded by Hanoman, the revered white monkey general. Using suar wood as her medium, the artisan passionately conveys Bali's rich Hindu heritage through the art she learned from her father, master artisan Nyoman Subrata.

"Third artwork by members of the Subrata family"
I purchased my first Subrata Barong mask 25 years ago, and it guards the door of the family house since that time. When I established my own consulting business and needed a work apartment I went to Novica to see if I could find another piece by the Subrata Paterfamilias, Nyoman Subrata, who carved our old Barong mask and also a beautiful mer-person sculpture that I have at work. I was sad to see that he had left us, but delighted to see that another family member carries on his legacy. Very happy with this new Barong, who watchfully guards the door to my work residence.

Preserving Traditions
Subrata has been a master carver for many years. He is one of the original Novica artisans and now provides work to other artisans at his carving workshop. He has trained his daughter, Indrawati, in all aspects of his business and she will keep the workshop going when Subrata no longer is able to.

Nyoman Subrata has received 6 microcredit loans with 0% interest from Kiva and Novica, the first for $1300 and the most recent for $2600. Proceeds were used to stock up on the materials he needs, such as various woods.
