Details

This delightful small sculpture is hand carved from cedar wood by Mexico's Claudio Ojeda. He paints the tiger figurine by hand in the style of alebrijes, a colorful form of Mexican folk art. Small parts are separated for shipping to protect from breakage.

The folk art tradition of alebrijes dates back to the 1930's in Mexico City. A man named Pedro Linares was taken ill, and in his fevered dreams he saw a strange land populated with curious creatures--a donkey with wings, a rooster with bull's horns, and a lion with the head of a dog. The beasts all ran at him, shouting "alebrije! alebrije!". Upon his recovery, Linares began recreating the fantastical creatures he had seen in his dream. The art form gained popularity, and alebrijes are now made of wood as well as papier mache. The same style of painting can also be found on other (non-animal) items.

"Beautiful Armadillo Alebrije"

This armadillo alebrije lit me up the moment I received it. It immediately became the catalyst for my growing interest in understanding the meaning of each alebrije in respect to culture and to the animal being represented, and inspired me to begin a small collection of these gorgeous works of art. The armadillo Alebrije made by Claudio Ojedo is in a playful repose, cheerful, and beautifully constructed. While I have not used the keychain, it would also be perfect for someone who wants to take this work of art “on the go.”

"Bright Owl"

This was a checkout deal that maybe would end up decorating a gift bag and maybe not. It was too good to decorate a bag so I kept it. I love the fine details painted on the back. It would also make a great tree ornament. Thank you Claudio for your beautiful work.

"Another addition to a critter collection"

This artist really captured the essence of the real thing. It looks like one of the chameleons photographed by the biology field researcher who will be delighted when she receives it on her birthday.
