Used during certain festivals by the Bambara people of Mali, the chiwara figure is often worn atop ceremonial masks during dances as a symbol of force and wisdom necessary for coaxing food from the earth. Ghanaian artisan Aminu Ibrahim pays homage to this tradition, hand-carving this chiwara sculpture from sese wood. The elegant, horned creature is accentuated with pieces of embossed brass.
