Delivery EstimateNyoman Indrawati Subrata of the Subrata Family hand carves this suar wood statuette of the Hindu deity Sarasvati, goddess of music, science and art. She is supported by a bird, wings outstretched, symbolizing the openness needed for creativity and learning. In her many hands she holds various gifts: a rebab (a musical instrument), a lontar or palm book (a symbol of knowledge), a genetri or bell (portraying science) and a lotus (the symbol of loveliness and purity).
The artisan carries on the extraordinary art work of her late father, Nyoman Subrata.

Words cannot do justice to this stunning masterpiece... it is beautifully made and extremelly detailled. You can feel the love and dedication that was put into creating it and I love the special energy the Sarasvati Goddess radiates.

"Third artwork by members of the Subrata family"
I purchased my first Subrata Barong mask 25 years ago, and it guards the door of the family house since that time. When I established my own consulting business and needed a work apartment I went to Novica to see if I could find another piece by the Subrata Paterfamilias, Nyoman Subrata, who carved our old Barong mask and also a beautiful mer-person sculpture that I have at work. I was sad to see that he had left us, but delighted to see that another family member carries on his legacy. Very happy with this new Barong, who watchfully guards the door to my work residence.

Preserving Traditions
Subrata has been a master carver for many years. He is one of the original Novica artisans and now provides work to other artisans at his carving workshop. He has trained his daughter, Indrawati, in all aspects of his business and she will keep the workshop going when Subrata no longer is able to.

Nyoman Subrata has received 6 microcredit loans with 0% interest from Kiva and Novica, the first for $1300 and the most recent for $2600. Proceeds were used to stock up on the materials he needs, such as various woods.
