Representing protection, jaguars were exalted in ancient Mayan culture. El Salvador's Oscar Rodolfo Mendoza creates this small mask, which is crafted of ceramic and painted by hand with naturally-derived pigments from the achiote plant. An old man, his face decorated with red face paint, wears earrings and a hat with jaguar spots.
