Figurines known as akuaba are used as ritual fertility dolls in Ghana and other parts of West Africa. They are carried by girls and women to enhance their fertility and ensure the beauty and health of their offspring. Lord Robert Penrose carves this akuaba sculpture by hand from sese wood, embellishing the broad forehead and base with embossed aluminum.
