Details

The colors of Africa appear in bright beads and hand-loomed kente cloth, conferring an extraordinary beauty on this djembe drum. Ernestina Oppong Asante carves the piece from tweneboa wood, adding brass inlays. Highly regarded in Ghana, Adinkra symbols adorn the base. The rotating form of Gye Nyame means "I fear none except God." The sankofa means "go back to your roots," conveyed through a bird with its head tilted backward.

The djembe originated in Benin, where it is used during voodoo rites, and has been introduced into neighboring countries. It is indispensable in contemporary reggae. The goatskin head is affixed by iron rings wrapped in cotton, and a macramé cord can be slung over the shoulder.
