Details

Black and white woodcut prints depict scenes from life in Northeastern Brazil. The first, 'Country Courtship,' depicts a couple dallying in the shade of a cashew tree in a hidden countryside bower. Birds serenade them and a lizard watches curiously. Suggesting the Garden of Eden, a serpent slithers up the tree trunk. Titled "Namoro do Matuto" in Portuguese.

As day breaks in Northeastern Brazil, the farm is bustling with activity in the second vignette. The cow is milked, chickens fed and water fetched from the river where an industrious young man is fishing. Everyone gets an early start to avoid the midday heat in "Amanhecer na Fazenda."

"Forró na Fazenda" or "Dance on the Farm,'" the third print, depicts couples dancing to the music of a trio on rural Brazil.

Artist Ivan Borges transfers the images to white ceramic tiles and frames all three in a single composition.
