Details

Inspired by the musician's fingerprints, intricate geometric motifs adorn the base of a traditional djembe drum. Lawrence Kattah creates the patterns in warm tweneboah wood. The djembe originated in Benin, where it is used during voodoo rites, and has been introduced into neighboring countries; it has become indispensable in reggae. The goatskin head is affixed by iron rings wrapped in cotton, and an macramé cord can be slung over the shoulder.
