Northern Thai Temple Art Painting, "The Prince"
A young prince is elegant and handsome as he goes to the palace. Accompanied by ten companions, he carries a red parasol and dresses in the style of Northern Thailand in the late 19th century. Pathawee interprets a famous painting in the Viharn Lai Kam, or Gilded Assembly Hall at Wat Phumin.
Wat Phumin, in Nan province, is situated in northern Thailand and was established in the period of Sukhothai. It differs from other temples in that its ceremonial and public areas are housed under the same roof. Its murals depict the Buddha, local legends and the lifestyle and culture of Lanna (northern Thai) people in the past.

Mario Sergio Avilés honors Guatemala's past and present with this impressive oil on canvas. Inspired by history and textile arts, his composition becomes a powerful statement. "This painting is about the sorrow the descendents of the Maya feel about their lost glory. They look for their roots in the past trying to recuperate their emptied identity," Avilés says as he translates the symbolism in his art. "The kite is a message between the living and their ancestors: the union between the underworld and the world. It represents a mythical means to connect with the past."
