Details

Eclectic squares evoke the cohesive harmony of this hand-woven tapestry. Walter Paucar designs the piece, its geometric details suggesting the profound and ancient meanings of the Inca calendar.

The Inca calendar is based on observations of the sun's movements and the moon's phases. The huato (year) is solar, but the quilla (months) depend upon lunar calculations. Certain economic, social and religious activities correspond to each month, accompanied by appropriate festivals and sacrifices. Historical sources attribute the division into 12 months to Mayta Capac. It is also believed that Pachacutec ordered the construction of the most important Inca observatories, such as the Intihuatana (solar clock).

Titled "Calendario" in Spanish.
