“I am Sergio Gutierrez. I was born in the magical region of Dolores Hidalgo in the state of Guanajuato. This area is the cradle of Talavera ceramics, which were inherited from the father of Mexican independence, Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla. In this beautiful region, tradition breathes in every corner. Because of this, I drew influence from artisans that leave every part of themselves in the colors and essence of each piece.

“I was filled with curiosity and started receiving instruction from these artisans, especially one of my uncles, who also shares this beautiful fascination. But, the best teaching that I have received is from daily experience, playing with colors, the expectation of the unknown, and the uncertainty of what will happen next. The primary materials that I use are ceramic, enamel, and ceramic paste. These materials would not amount to anything if not for the experience, practice, and knowledge that I have received.

“Innovation is one of the principal and fundamental characteristics of my career as an artisan, because it reflects my own personality. Through innovation, I am allowed to grow and learn things about myself that I did not know before.

“The key to this millenary art is to have total commitment to what you are doing. The colors constantly turn out differently than how I anticipate, I repeat pieces over and over again, and design crazy things that are different from what is on the market. You can only achieve this through practice. Starting this project was indeed challenging; the beginning of something new. I conquered my fear of failure through practicing day and night.
