For this painting, Guatemalan artist draws inspiration from the eruption of the Volcán de Fuego in Guatemala, which occurred on June 3rd, 2018. Among those rescued during the eruption was six-month-old Esmeralda. Jose pays homage to Esmeralda, painting this colorful composition with wavy forms that depict several women wearing traditional pre-Hispanic clothing. One of the women holds a baby, which represents little Esmeralda. Mayan glyphs around the edges of the painting represent the date of the eruption.
Titled Esmeralda la niña del volcán de fuego in Spanish.
