Details

Giving life to dead materials, Kola Ogunsunlade Joseph creates this impressive mask. Traditionally used in masquerades to give the gods a visible presence, such ceremonial masks are common among the Akans in Ghana, the Yoruba in Nigeria and the Vogan in Togo. Utilizing metal plates, car parts and found objects, the Ghanaian sculptor forms the piece with arc welding materials and finishes the mask with clear varnish, skillfully contrasting the material's natural colors and textures.
