Details

With a sparkle in his eyes, his expression is one of endearing innocence and it is masterfully captured in this mixed media painting by Moza. She uses the same natural dyes that the Kaiapó community uses to paint their bodies. Moza learned the techniques on how to prepare the colors when she lived amongst them in Mato Grosso. She starts by preparing the canvas with sand and clay, and mixes more sand and clay for the face, adding red obtained from the annatto seed. The hair is painted with carbon. She obtains green from the jenipapo fruit, and red for the parrot from hibiscus flowers. The necklace is painted with white chalk and the earrings with hibiscus.

The Kaipó community is spread out amongst various villages on the banks of the Xingú River. Their name, Kaipó, means "Men who look like monkeys" – which they received because they wear monkey masks during their rituals.

Titled "Criança indígena do Xingu" in Portuguese.
