Guardian jaguars protect the maize for the family's daily sustenance. They keep their vigil at each end of a metate, or grinding stone. Working in ceramic, Arlen Estrada covers the smooth surfaces with pre-Hispanic images, painted by hand. "With this Chorotega-inspired figurine, I want to encourage the preservation of our archaeological treasures," the Nicaraguan artisan explains.
