Details

Higinio Hernandez Carrillo crafts a beautiful skull figurine in dazzling colors. Images from Huichol cosmology cover it, each tiny seed bead placed one by one on a coat of beeswax. Moving from the forehead down the back of the skull, are stylized jicuri, or peyote buds. They resemble six-petal flowers. The centerpiece of Huichol ritualism, jicuri is revered for its curative properties and its ability to enlighten the one who partakes of it. Larger jicuri buds glow on each side. Scuttling across the temples, are yellow scorpions, guardian of the corn – staff of life – and they must receive gifts before the harvest.

Do not expose this piece to direct heat or light, as it could soften the wax adhesive and thus loosen the beads.
