Teruka, the scorpion is the guardian of the corn – staff of life – and must receive gifts before the harvest. The bright orange creature scuttles across the back of this handsome beadwork figurine. On the forehead is a bright version of Kawuyomaire, a blue deer who travels the heavens as a guide and guardian, and can be heard by the shaman. Twin deer face in opposite directions on the sides of the skull with peyote blossoms between them. Higinio Hernandez Carrillo places tiny seed beads one at a time to create dazzling images that offer a glimpse of Huichol icons.
Do not expose this piece to direct heat or light, as it could soften the wax adhesive and thus loosen the beads.
