For Mayans, masks were seen as an extension of one's face, a further expression of one's personality and attributes. This hand-carved pinewood wall mask by Jose Canil Ramos of Guatemala expertly depicts a face adorned with a quetzal bird. According to Mayan legend, this bird came to be by gods Kukulkan and Tepeu blowing on the leaves of a guayacán tree.
