One of the most important symbols of the Maya culture was the jaguar, or balam. The Maya people worshipped the jaguar and believed that kings and nobles were descendants of this powerful animal. Inspired by the political and religious significance of the jaguar to the Maya people, Mexican artisan Angel Ceron paints an image of a jaguar onto this skull sculpture that he handcrafts out of clay.
