Details

This Ghanaian sculpture is handcrafted of local sese wood in the style of traditional fertility dolls. Designed by Emmanuel Opoku Asante, the fertility doll depicts a woman of the Ashanti tribe wearing beaded jewelry of recycled glass. Marks on the sculpture's cheeks reflect scarification practices. According to cultural traditions, fertility dolls like these were given to women who were unable to bear children. A distressed beige finish completes this characteristic home accessory.
