With a red macaw on her shoulder and a tray of bananas on her head, a young woman from Brazil's Terena people offers the ripe yellow fruit for sale. Leslie Bassi Gaffuri depicts the girl in ceramic with traditional face paints and tribal dress; wild orchids adorn her long gown. "I am from Mato Grosso do Sul, where these people live in the Amazon rain forest and wetlands," the artisan says. "For me, it's essential to emphasize the importance of these native women."
