The legendary lovers of the Indian epic poem Ramayana are depicted in this exquisite pair of Javanese shadow puppets, handcrafted by Mujiyono. The stately figures of Rama and Sita come to life in leather that is hand-painted to reveal their colorful openwork garments. Rama is revered for his unending compassion, courage and devotion to religious values and duty. Sita is considered the personification of the earth's fertility, abundance and well-being.
