A burst of color accompanies every beat of this extraordinary djembe drum. First used in Benin for voodoo rituals, djembe drums now enliven celebrations around the world. Ernestina Oppong Asante combines a passion for carving with music, resulting in a traditional instrument with contemporary flair. The base is carved from tweneboa, a local hardwood of golden grain that highlights the engaging designs. Oppong applies shoe and mansion polish to enhance the wood's smooth, radiant appearance. Iron rod rings are attached to the mouth of the drum and wrapped with cotton to prevent rusting. Through these rings nylon ropes are double-woven, securely fastening the goatskin drumhead. Bright kente cloths adorn the upper part, while the base features brass inlay and beaded horns.
