West African artisan Gordon Adu creates a lovely statuette that wholly captures the uniqueness of the dromedary, or one-humped, camel. This wonderful animal has been domesticated in Africa for over 2,000 years and is key to the survival of many who rely on these animals for transport, trading, ploughing, and as a source of food and materials. The artisan creates the statuette using native sese wood, which he hand carves and dries for two weeks before painting in shades of maize yellow and brick red. Local clay is used to give the camel statuette an attractive distressed finish, which accentuates the natural and earthy appeal of the design.
