Old Saint Nick is as festive as the Christmas star in a set of four ornaments from Bali. Wayan Cidra, from Bhakti Senang Hat, crafts each albesia wood ornament by hand and paints them green. The set of four ornaments hangs from golden cords.

"I'm the youngest of five siblings and our parents are farmers in Gianyar. I never went to school because of my parent's financial limitations, and also because I got poliomyelitis when I was just a child and it left me with weakened knees. I wanted to help my parents in some way, so I have been crafting ornaments since I was 14 years old. I felt so proud to myself when I received my very first income. Although I'm not really happy with my physical condition, I'm happy doing ornaments and hopefully my products can make more people happy. My hobby is singing traditional Balinese songs. I'm married and we have a son and a daughter. My wife is the one who helps me in making these ornaments, which I hope makes people's Christmas happier."

"Beautiful"

I liked this bracelet very much and I ordered two. However, one of it was smaller than the size stated in the description, and I had to add additional yellow jade beads that I had from another bracelet to extend its size.

"Red Santa Stars"

They are super unique & just perfect on my Scandinavian Style Christmas tree! Im very pleased with them. The only reason for the four-star rating is that a bit of some substance (glue?) got on one of them & cant get it off, therefore am not using that single piece. I think it mightve stuck together during transport. Other than that, just perfect!

Working with Disabilities

Working with Disabilities

Bhakti Senang Hati was founded and is run by people with physical challenges who provide a special service for the physically challenged in Bali. The society also provides wheelchairs and housing, and runs Bhakti Senang Hati Places, a home for children with disabilities. The seven artisans who are members of the foundation use a wheelchair or have a prosthetic leg. This does not stop them from living a full-life and striving to be self-sufficient.

Confronting Adversity

Confronting Adversity

The Bakti Senang Hati Foundation assists persons with disabilities. Living with a disability can be more difficult in Bali than in other places. Bali's Hindu culture carries with it the additional stigma of karma. To be disabled is the physical manifestation of bad karma. Traditionally, the disabled were hidden away and isolation was added to their burden. Attitudes are slowly changing and programs such as the Bakti Senang Hati Foundation teach self-confidence as well as the practical skills that will enable their members to become self-supporting.

Profound Impact

Profound Impact

Although their Novica sales do not provide enough income for each artisan to be self-supporting, these sales have a profound impact on their lives. The income contributes not only to their financial stability but also to their self-esteem. It is important to these artisans that their work is seen and appreciated around the world.
