Elephants raise their trunks in celebration to herald India's magnificent artistry. Khalid Ali preserves a legendary art form with a mango wood jewelry box lavishly trimmed with embossed brass. Colorful glass beads complement the detailed work on the box's exterior. Inside, the box features six maroon velvet compartments and a mirror on the lid. The box is fitted with a discreet latch on the side.
Khalid learned repousse metal work, known as patra, or Indo Napoleon, from his father and uncle. It is one of the most popular Indian arts and Khalid has diligently worked at it for more than 20 years. He continues to grow artistically and has taught many of his family members and other artisans the vast array of skills needed to produce this distinctive form of Indian metalwork.
Khalid Ali has received 2 microcredit loans with 0% interest from Kiva and Novica, the first for $1000 and the most recent for $1800.
