Elephant Soapstone Decorative Box, "Indian Elephants"
For Gulam Rasool, soapstone's natural grain evokes an elephant's wrinkled hide. He carves this box by hand in the shape of an elephant, painting more pachyderms on the sides. Silken caps and blankets identify them as the king's own animals.

Close to his eightieth birthday, Gulam continues the art he learned from his elders. His father was an marble carver and jali artisan honored with the state award for excellence. Gulam has been honored with the same distinction. He still works alongside his son and other artisans to whom he has taught this craft, and treasures the role he plays in continuing this important Indian artistic tradition.

Nearing his eighth decade, master stone sculptor Gulam Rasool continues to provide for his family, especially his grandchildren.

"Well made beautiful box"
This box is heavy and of great quality. I use it on a decorative tea towel on a piece of furniture to keep the towel in place. It?s quite a conversation topic. I love the colors as well.

I absolutely love this piece. The colors are vivid. The simple fact he has an eyeball brings him to life. He really pops on my display table. I love the postcard and booklet that comes with the piece. Makes me feel like Ive met the artist.
