Wearing a dress of fig leaves, Catrina arrives on the Day of the Dead as an honored guest. Political cartoonist Jose Guadalupe Posadas created this renowned character in the early 1900's as a critique of Mexico's bourgeoisie, and to remind them they are mortals too. The Catrina name refers to death personified who is always dressed in exuberant fashion and colors in order to lure mortals. Always creative, Armando Ramírez sculpts her image by upcycling a wide variety of metal pieces including wire mesh for the broad-brimmed bonnet while sheet metal scraps are transformed into her gown, shawl and handbag. Wires become her arms and shape her jewelry.
Ramírez does not give his sculptures a fine polished finish, therefore smudges and scratches may be present.
