Playing traditional instruments and dancing with revelry, a group of people celebrate baby Jesus in this retablo by Peruvian artisan Erika Ulloa. Within a box of wood, the musicians, Jesus, Joseph, Mary, and an alpaca are crafted of ceramic for an intricate composition. Erika diligently paints the retablo by hand, opening with floral doors that swing on faux leather hinges.

"Christ, the Prince of Peace"
With her usual consummate artistry and imagination, Erika Ulloa offers a prayer for peace in her depiction of the birth of the Christ Child changing soldiers from agents of war into bringers of aid and comfort. For me at least, this takes just another nativity scene in my collection to an instrument of contemplation and of motivation for working for social change. It is a true work of art, that changes the viewer.

"La Tunantada"
Erica Ulua brings both great imagination and great skill to her retablos. La Tunantada is the fourth of her lovely works that I have purchased. All have been been nativity scenes of one sort or another.

"Magnifico"
Erika Ulloa
