A young woman from Brazil's Terena people carries a tray of ripe bananas on her head; a white macaw perches on her hand. Selling tropical fruit is a source of income. Working in ceramic, Leslie Bassi Gaffuri depicts the girl with traditional face paints and tribal dress. "I am from Mato Grosso do Sul, where these people live in the Amazon rain forest and wetlands," the artisan says. "For me, it's essential to emphasize the importance of these native women."
