Rui de Oliveira masterfully captures sadness, intense fear, and longing in this colorful Cubist-inspired gravure print. A young child clings to his mother, whose intense facial expression exudes immense sorrow. Using acrylics, tempera, crayon, and pastel, he portrays a Tutsi family running from their homeland due to the violence and acts of genocide perpetrated by the Hutu people of Rwanda.
