Details

Sizzling on a jet black background, incandescent colors burn and glow. This mask by Higinio Hernandez Carrillo is resplendent with Huichol symbols, the art a visual offering to a benevolent universe. Called jicuri, peyote buds form the centerpiece of Huichol ritualism. Six-sided bursts of light take the form of rrurabe, the guardian stars that accompany the shaman. Alert on the nose, Teruka, the scorpion is the guardian of the corn – staff of life – and must receive gifts before the harvest. Six deer chase each other around a peyote bud on the chin. Brother of the Huichol people, Kawuyomaire is a blue deer who travels the heavens as a guide and guardian. He can be heard by the shaman and his presence is perceptible through the peyote. The artisan creates the stunning images with tiny seed beads, offering a glimpse into the cosmology of his people.

Do not expose this piece to direct heat or light, as it could soften the wax adhesive and thus loosen the beads.
