Details

This imposing personage speaks with conviction, his proud features crowned by horns. Carved by hand from native sese wood, the authentic African mask is designed by Evelyn Kafui Ahianyo. She names it Dzator, which means "transfer of authority" in the language of Ghana's Anlo-Ewe people. "During a traditional Anlo wedding ceremony, the groom is given such a mask by the father of the bride," she says. "This shows that the father is transferring his authority over his daughter to her new husband, who will protect and care for her."
