Photographer Thalles Tramon of Brazil, inspired by his love of nature, recorded the lives and ceremonies of the indigenous Pataxó peoples who are struggling to preserve the forests of Bahia. This black and white photo print was taken during the sacred full moon ceremony, and captures a Pataxó man in traditional costume holding a maraca. A maraca is considered a sacred instrument and, during the ceremony, it is a way of communicating with the spirits and renewing energy. By warming the maraca over incense, the man shows gratitude and warms his own soul.
From the sales of these prints, the artist is donating 30 percent to the Pataxó Cultural Center of Porto do Boi.
