Details

Originally assigned to a quiet friary, one ordination day St Anthony of Padua was asked to speak since no one else was prepared to do so. He impressed everyone with his knowledge of scripture that people everywhere came to hear him, which is why he is often depicted with an opened bible. Years later, when preaching in a cave among animals, Baby Jesus appeared to him, and this is the reason he is the saint most often portrayed with Him. Guatemala's Jose Canil Ramos includes both in this inspired pinewood sculpture, which he expertly carves and paints by hand. "St Anthony is celebrated on June 13th, and on that day the young women in my village put his image upside down and offer the Lord's Prayer 13 times, as well as 13 coins asking him to find them a good husband," says Canil, for St Anthony is also known as the patron saint of fertility and lost objects.
