A stern visage seems to scowl, at the same time eliciting awe. Powerful in its beauty, this mask is embellished with finely embossed plates of brass and aluminum, and artfully painted by hand. "The masks are seen in the area of Lawra in the Upper West Region of Ghana," says artisan Abdul Aziz Mohamadu. "They are hung in the farms during the harvest season to frighten away those who would want to steal the crops." He names the mask Soro, a Hausa word which means "Scaring."
