George Alfred Frempong of Ghana handcrafts this decorative mask of sese wood. It represents the artisan's interpretation of nyansa, which means "wisdom" in the Akan language. The rounded forehead has channels painted gold and surrounded by red dots. The slanted eyes and pointed lips are red-tinged on a dark narrow face that sports stamped aluminum plates painted black in a rhombus shape on the nose and cheeks. A long cascade of jute string composes the beard. The mask is rubbed with clay to give it an aged finish then polished with the meat of the kola nut.
