Mouth open as if to speak, a young man calls from the past. His stern visage is fierce even in the afterlife. Believed to personify an ancestor, this ghost mask inspires a sensation of awe. Ernestina Oppong Asante carves piece by hand from sese wood. After the wood is thoroughly dry, her skilled artisans sand its features to satiny smoothness and apply dark tan polish to give it a distinguished finish as well as to protect the wood. Brass and aluminum plates along with copper wire add its beauty. This exquisite example of Ghanaian art makes a dramatic addition to any decor.
