Details

Ernestina Oppong Asante shares the wisdom of the legendary Adinkra symbols with this colorful threadwork composition. She reveals the presence of three women, with two holding symbols as she applies one thread at a time. The top one, represented by crossed swords, is Akofena which stands for courage, valor, and heroism. Sankofa, in the shape of a bird with its head turned to the back, symbolizes the importance of learning from the past. Adinkra are visual symbols, originally created by the Akan of Ghana and the Gyaman of Cote d'Ivoire and they represent concepts or aphorisms.
