Ghanaian artisan Eva Asantewa Amakye faithfully replicates the Mblo mask of the Baule people of Ivory Coast. Highly stylized, the hand-carved wood mask feautures two identical faces which the Baule regard as the abstract projection of ideas relating to complementary opposites. This stunning wall mask is carved by hand of sese wood and finished with an aged appearance.
Mblo performances feature masked dancers who impersonate familiar subjects that range from animals to human caricatures. The dances escalate in complexity and importance and eventually culminate in a performance that pays tribute to the community's most admired member. The person is represented by a mask featuring their artistic "double" or "namesake."
